There’s good food, there’s comfort food, and there’s happy food. Happy food are dishes specifically designed to lighten up and brighten up one’s mood. Van Gogh is Bipolar (VGIB) serves just that, food that makes people happy.
My friends and I love coming back to this very eclectic restaurant to unwind and basically to laugh our hearts out, while being entertained by our Mistresses and Gigolos of the night. Don’t worry, nobody here serves in their “tighty-whities” or “lingerie”. Everything is rated PG… well… sort of… ;P
While still waiting for some of our friends to arrive, we first made our own tea. VGIB has D.I.Y. tea section wherein one can choose his/her teapot, tea leaves, and tea cup. Of course, we ended up “fighting” over who made the best tea concoction. (I still believe my tea is the best!)
There is no specific menu for VGIB, you would either order from a set of 4, or a set of 5. Set of 4 would include a Potion of the Day, a Soup, an Entrée, and a Dessert. Set of 5 would include a Salad. Food will depend on either Jetro (owner), his mood, and/or the Kitchen Fairy. I would usually order set of 5, everything else… I’ll leave it with the Food Gods to decide.
Virginia Woolf’s Tears is a turkey based soup, served with cashew nuts, basil leaf, and edible flowers. Everything VGIB uses and serves is organic, and is locally sourced.
According to the menu, “Egg is an excellent source of protein that gives that ‘extra kick’ you need, especially when eaten soft-boiled.”
Axl Rose’s Egg Shot, especially when served with the *Black Sauce*, is one reason why I love going back to VGIB. It is sweet, tangy, creamy, egg-y, all in a good and cohesive way. A perfect way to perk up one’s appetite.
If you order the set of 4, you will not get the cabbage experience. This is basically a boiled whole cabbage, served with crispy fried fish, salted egg, mangoes, pineapple, capers, homemade banana chips, cashew nuts, and basil leaves.
You would peel of a leaf from the cabbage, choose your preferred toppings, roll it like a spring roll, and dip it in sauce.
I once exclaimed that VGIB’s chicken dish is by far the best chicken dish I’ve had so far. Sadly they are not doing that anymore. Well, on my second visit they are not. Was kind of disappointed that I was not able to have the braised chicken dish. Nonetheless, my friends liked this Roasted Chicken dish.
Two words: Absinthe and Chocolate. What could be more sinful than that? A shot of 100% alcohol, with pure melted chocolate as chaser. To people who are allergic to alcohol, or can’t drink alcohol, they do have a more wholesome dessert as alternative.
